Preface to the Second Epistle to the Corinthians

The Apostle Paul writes the second epistle to the Corinthians because in the first he had promised to come to them, but was detained by the Spirit for other, far more important, matters and was subjected to trials. He needed to write in justification of his prolonged delay, and therefore writes the second epistle, explaining why he was slow in coming. Moreover, after the first epistle the Corinthians had become better, and he needed to approve and praise them. For just as he had rebuked them when they sinned, so he was obliged to praise them when they had corrected themselves. Therefore one does not see in this epistle the former threats, except only in certain places toward the end of the epistle, which were necessary because some of the Jews thought highly of themselves and disparaged Paul as an ignorant man undeserving of any respect.
