Preface

Preface
Ephesus is the metropolis (chief city) of Asia Minor; it honored as supreme the goddess Artemis, and in her honor there was a most magnificent and beautiful temple, which was revered by all the Greeks, but especially by the Ephesians, so that Ephesus was even called the servant of Artemis, as is stated in the book of Acts (Acts 19:35). The evangelist John lived in Ephesus for a very long time, having been exiled there, and died there. Paul also left Timothy there as a teacher; the most renowned of the philosophers also lived in it. Therefore, since this city was so devout and so famous for its wise men, Paul writes to the Ephesians with special diligence and entrusts to them the deepest and most exalted thoughts, as those who had already received instruction. He writes this epistle, full of exalted thoughts, from Rome, where he was in chains. Therefore we too need special attentiveness in order to understand the mysteries contained in it.
